DRUGS AND HEALTH

When traveling abroad, especially to Dubai, it’s crucial not to overlook the local health system and the medical care available. No one expects to get sick on vacation, but incidents can happen without warning. Being well-informed about healthcare options in Dubai, and knowing where and how to get medical help, is essential to effectively managing any unforeseen health situation.

HEALTH

Health care in Dubai

Dubai’s healthcare system, managed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), includes a network of public and private hospitals with modern facilities that meet international standards of care. These establishments are comparable to those found in Europe. The quality of medical care here is generally excellent, ensuring that anyone with a health problem during their stay in Dubai will receive competent care, whether in the public or private sector.

The cost of a medical consultation

In general, healthcare costs in Dubai vary according to the type of establishment: they are high in private clinics and more moderate in public hospitals. For example, a consultation with a GP costs between €46 and €110, and between €95 and €238 with a specialist. A home visit by a French-speaking doctor can cost around €150.

Access to healthcare in Dubai is not free for foreigners, which has led the Dubai Health Authority to make health insurance compulsory for all foreign residents. Tourists are therefore advised to take out travel insurance to cover emergency medical care and medical repatriation.

Which travel insurance should I take out?

For a stay in Dubai, it is essential to take out travel insurance covering the entire duration of your visit. This insurance not only protects against loss or theft of property, but also against potential medical emergencies. Companies such as Allianz Travel and AXA offer various insurance options for short or long stays, including coverage for trip cancellation, third-party liability, baggage loss or damage, medical expenses, hospitalization, specialized consultations, medication and repatriation.

Travel insurance, which can be taken out online before departure, is comparatively inexpensive compared to the cost of some tourist attractions and represents a prudent precaution, guaranteeing a carefree stay in Dubai.

DRUGS

Drugs and prescriptions

Although some over-the-counter medicines can be purchased in Dubai pharmacies, it is important to note that substances containing codeine, as well as narcotics and psychotropic drugs (tranquilizers, sleeping pills, antidepressants, etc.), are regulated in the United Arab Emirates. For these drugs, a prescription from a local doctor or authorization from the Ministry of Health is required for purchase.

Taking codeine-containing medicines to Dubai

Taking medicines to Dubai requires special care. While some products available without a prescription in Belgium are authorized, others, notably those containing codeine, are strictly forbidden in Dubai. This includes analgesics such as codeine paracetamol. The import of these drugs is prohibited, even with a medical certificate. Conventional paracetamol is accepted, but it is essential to check that it does not contain codeine. If you are unsure about the composition of your medication and whether it is acceptable in Dubai, you are advised to consult a doctor or pharmacy before departure.

If you are unsure about the legality of a medicine or the validity of a medical certificate or passport for Dubai, it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist. For information specific to the United Arab Emirates, contact the UAEembassy or consulate in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
